Review: Walkers Mighty Lights

Walkers have another brand spanking new range of crisps and they’ve been nice enough to send me multipacks of each flavour to review. The new crisps are called Walkers Mighty Lights and they come in 3 flavours: lightly salted, roast chicken and cheese and onion, all of which are suitable for vegetarians. Now you might be wondering what’s different about these crisps as Walkers already make these flavours. The new Mighty Lights come in 25g packets which makes them a good size for a quick snack or addition to the lunchbox for kids or adults. And with 30% less fat than standard crisps, no artificial colours, preservatives or MSG they are a slightly healthier option as well as being a source of fibre with 1.2g of fibre in every packet.
I’m very happy to see cheese and onion in the new collection as it has always been my first choice when it comes to choosing a packet of crisps and these did not disappoint. My boyfriend made a beeline for the roast chicken flavour and declared them delicious. We were both pleasantly surprised by the lightly salted flavour too as neither of us are overly keen on ready salted or plain crisps. I usually find them too salty and my boyfriend finds them too boring. These lightly salted Mighty Lights had just the right amount of salt for me, 0.28g in this packet or 5% of the recommended daily allowance, and with the extra seasoning (I’m not quite sure what it is as it just lists herbs and spices in the ingredients) kept my boyfriend’s taste buds happy. I was a bit surprised to see sugar in the ingredients for the seasoning as it’s not something you’d expect in a lightly salted crisp but this is a minor niggle as they did taste very good. All the crisps had a great crunch, an important feature of any crinkle cut crisps and unlike some other crisps I’ve eaten in the past my fingers weren’t greasy after eating these. This is very useful for when I want a quick snack at my desk and don’t want greasy fingerprints all over my keyboard.  I’ve also taken these on the train and it was nice not having to worry about having messy fingers after eating a packet to keep me going on a long journey.

The packaging is fun with a cheeky little crisp character pretending to be big and tough but with stickman arms and legs, though look behind him and you see a big, muscular strongman. A clever visual pun on the name Mighty Lights which I think would appeal well to kids. On the back of the packet there is a quote from the little crisp man “I may not weigh a lot, but I’m a big personality and I know exactly who I am. I’m not changing for anyone – I’m a true one off!” I think this sums up the crisps well, it’s a small packet but it delivers on flavour and makes you take notice.
Thanks to Walkers for sending me the crisps to try, I was compensated for this post and as always all opinions are my own.
